Guided reading is one of the most important tools we have for meeting the needs of students at all stages of development.  Find out how guided reading can be used to impact the three key areas of differentiated curriculum:  content, process and product.  This session will address the Five P’s of Pre-reading, using sticky notes to encourage strategy use during reading, and tools and tricks for getting students to revisit the text after reading.

Guided Reading:  What are the other kids doing? (K-3)
How can we engage students in meaningful independent learning activities while we work with a small group.  In this session we’ll discuss routines and activities, management and a simple two-day organizational structure.

Supporting Struggling Readers with RTI (Grades 3-8)
Are there any students in your classroom who can’t cope with grade-level reading materials?  Do you have students who avoid reading or cause behavior problems because the work is “too hard”?   Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tiered approach to providing support for struggling readers, from the core classroom instruction to targeted, short-term support to intensive individual programming.  In this session, Lori will share tips and techniques to help classroom teachers identify the needs of struggling learners, monitor student progress and provide evidence-based intervention strategies to help students accelerate reading proficiency.

Beyond Running Records:  Developing Effective Classroom Reading Assessments, (Grades 3-8)
Evaluating and assessing students’ reading is one of the biggest challenges we teachers face. And yet, good assessment for learning is essential for guiding our teaching to meet the needs of our students.  Lori will share insights that she has gained as a developer of large-scale reading assessments, including the three key decisions that should guide all assessment, and ways that we can help all our students score higher on state and national tests.

Reading ON the lines, BETWEEN the lines and BEYOND the lines:  Teaching students to draw inferences from text
Inferring involves applying background knowledge to what is read in order to interpret what is not directly stated in the text.  Our students infer all the time.  They just don’t always know it!  Learn how to use literature, pictures, puzzles and cartoons to help students recognize and articulate what they do when they infer – and to add this understanding to their comprehension toolbox.
